Abstract
The study was conducted to determine the effect of oregano extract on the growth
performance of colored broilers. Specifically, the study aimed to determine the
performance of colored broilers in terms of gain in weight, feed intake, feed conversion
ratio; morbidity and mortality rate, and the profitability of raising colored broilers given
oregano extract. The study was conducted from January to March 2015 at the Benguet
State University, Poultry Experimental Area, La Trinidad, Benguet.
Following the Completely Randomized Design, 120 day-old colored broilers
were distributed into three treatments. Each treatment had four replications with ten birds
per replication making a total of 40 birds per treatment. The three treatments were: T0-
control with commercial vitamin mineral antibiotic premix (VMAP), T1-15 ml oregano
extract per liter of water, and T2 - 30 ml oregano extract per liter of water.
Results of the study revealed that there were no significant differences between treatments in all parameters. The initial weight at day-old is 0.046 and the final weight at 56 days is 2.043, average daily gain in weight is 0.035, average daily feed intake is 0.084 and average daily water intake is 0.192, feed conversion ratio is 2.387, mortality and morbidity. And cost of feed to produce a kg in weight is Php 64.442.
Based on the result of the study, it is not practical to use oregano extract as additive in the drinking water of colored broilers because of the added cost in the preparation.
