Abstract:
This study was conducted to determine the health teaching strategies utilized by Benguet State University student nurses in the clinical setting. Specifically, the study aimed to determine the level of effectiveness of the health teaching strategies utilized by Benguet State University student nurses in the clinical setting. Moreover, it sought to determine the level of effectiveness of health teaching strategies utilized by Benguet State University student nurses in the clinical setting considering age, gender, educational attainment, and type of respondents.
There were 63 respondents of the study. The descriptive method of the research and a structured questionnaire were utilized to gather the data which were then subjected to statistical methods such as weighted mean, frequency counts and percentage, F-test, for one sample, t-test for two samples and Cochran Q-test.
Results of the study revealed that there was varied health teaching strategies that BSU student nurses utilized in the clinical setting. The findings also revealed that the health teaching strategies utilized by the BSU student nurses in the clinical setting are effective. Moreover, findings revealed that age, gender, educational attainment, and types of respondents have no effect on the level of effectiveness of the health teaching strategies.
Based on the finding, the researchers recommend that student nurses should further utilize varied health teaching strategies so that the client will be able to understand easily necessary information like the use of audio-visual materials (television, LCD projection, radio and motion pictures); involvement of student nurses in seminars, workshops and other training interactive activities of the college, university or other organizations to enrich them with more knowledge, skills and attitude towards providing effective health teachings to patients; clinical instructors should have an evaluation of the health education provided by the student nurses for its effectiveness; aside from the use of health teaching logbooks in the hospital, updating bulletin boards, frequent ward classes, providing enough time for one-on-one interview with the patients and watchers should also be emphasized; further studies should: a) include different wards like Surgery, Orthopaedic and Paediatric of different affiliating institutions; b) include different variables like cultural beliefs and ;language or dialects of the respondents c) evaluation of health teaching strategies using experimental designs across socio-economic status of patient d) pilot study of printed materials which are translated in the vernacular language and assess their level of effectiveness using quasi-experimental designs.
