Abstract:
This study was conducted to determine the antibacterial effect of the dandelion root extract on the bacteria S. aureus and the best concentration of the dandelion root extract as compared with the control.
This study utilized the experimental descriptive method. The experiment used decoction to obtain the extracts.
This study was conducted at the laboratory of the College of Veterinary Medicine of BSU in La Trinidad, Benguet on February 4-9 2013.
Findings showed that different treatments of dandelion root extract have no effect on the growth of S. aureus unlike clindamycin. Moreover, the positive control which is the over counter antibiotic, clindamycin yielded the highest mean of 11mm zone of inhibition.
From the data gathered, analyzed and interpreted, the following recommendations were forwarded, future researchers to use other parts of dandelion as a topical agent on treating acne vulgaris, future studies to use different extraction techniques such as percolation and ethanol extraction, further studies on the effects of dandelion extracts on Propionibacterium acne, another causative bacterium of Acne Vulgaris, further studies on the use of other plants for the treatment of Acne Vulgaris. Further studies on the effects of dandelion on other microorganism. Lastly, similar studies be conducted to validate the above findings.
