Abstract:
This study was conducted to determine the level of effectiveness of care rendered by Benguet State University student nurses to cancer patients. Specifically, It aimed to find out the level of effectiveness of care rendered by Benguet State University student nurses to cancer patients in the following dimensions of care psychological, spiritual, physical and social is considered; and the difference of the level of effectiveness of care rendered by Benguet State University student nurses to cancer patients as affected by the type of cancer, stage cancer and modality of treatment.
This study use Qualitative Research Design.
The data were gathered through a questionnaire administered to 40 cancer patients at Benguet General Hospital and Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center on December 17, 2012 to January 26 2013.
To obtain the needed data, computation of the weighted means and application of frequency count, percentage t-test and f-test were done.
The findings of the study were: (1) the student nurses rendered moderately effective care to cancer patients: which means that the care is frequently performed by the nurse in terms of the psychological, physical and social dimensions. The hypothesis stating that the effect of care rendered by Benguet State university student nurses to cancer patients is moderately effective in terms of the psychological, physical and social dimensions is accepted; while no accepted in terms of spiritual dimensions. (2) There is no significant difference in the effects of care rendered by student nurses to cancer patients considering the following: type of cancer, stage of cancer and modality of treatment. The hypothesis stating that there is a significant difference in the effects of care rendered by student nurses to cancer patients considering the type of cancer, stage of cancer and modality of treatment is not accepted.
Based on the findings, the following conclusions were derived: (1) the student nurses of Benguet State University frequently render care to cancer patients in terms of the psychological, physical and social dimensions except for the spiritual dimensions. (2) The type of cancer, stage cancer, and modality of treatment has no bearing in the level of effectiveness of care rendered by Benguet State University student nurses to cancer patients in terms of the dimensions of care.
