Farm Financing Practices of Chayote Farmer in Poblacion, Kibungan, Benguet

Abstract

This study was conducted to identify the sources of funds for chayote farmers in Poblacion, Kibungan, Benguet, to find out the reasons of choosing the source of funds, and determine the problem encountered by the farmers in financing their chayote production. The respondent of the study were 30 chayote farmers in Poblacion, Kibungan, Benguet. A structured survey questionnaire was used in gathering the data and was analyzed using simple statistics. The sources of capital for chayote production were from informal credit, from sale of produce, and from own savings of the farmers. The major source was informal credit and the least was personal savings. The source of informal credit were: relatives of the farmers, friends, neighbors, and the supply system. Majority of the farmer acquired informal credit from their relatives and the least is the supply system. The reasons of the farmers in using the informal credit were: easy to borrow and low interest or no interest if from relatives. The problem encountered by the farmers were not enough capital and lack of capital. Not enough capital means that the farmers have capital but not enough to finance all the operation while lack of capital means the farmers do not have capital at all.
