A total of nine one-year old native pigs were slaughtered to obtain linear measurements, full and empty weights of the digestive organs, and capacity of the gastrointestinal tract as affected by dietary treatments. The study was conducted from April 2015 at the Animal Genetic Resources project of Benguet State University in Bektey, La Trinidad Benguet. The pigs were previously fed with dietary treatments as follows: 3 pigs were given with T1- 25% dried SCR + 64.75% ground yellow corn (GYC) + 10.25% rice bran (RB), 3 pigs were given T2- 25% dried SCR + 51.75% ground yellow corn (GYC) + 23.25% rice bran (RB) and 3 pigs were given T3- 25% dried SCR + 44.00% ground yellow corn (GYC) + 31.00% rice bran (RB).
Except for length of lesser curvature and rectum, all parameters were not affected by the dietary treatments imposed. The mean slaughter weight of the pigs was of 61.33 kg. The mean full and empty weights, length, width thickness, greater curvature, capacity and the percent body weight of empty and full weights of the stomach 61.33 kg pig were 0.96 kg, 0.57 kg, 22.67 cm, 13.33 cm, 2.31cm, 48.16 cm, 3.33 liters, 0.94 % and 1.56%, respectively. The mean full and empty weights of the small intestine were 1.22 liters and 0.94 liters respectively. The mean of the weights of the full and empty as percent body weight were 1.98% and 1.53% respectively. The length, width, thickness, length of duodenum, length of jejunum, length of ileum, and the capacity of small intestines were 1000.44 cm, 1.98 cm, 1.56 mm, 25.33 cm, 832.67 cm, 141.67 cm and 4.26 l respectively. The mean parameters of large intestines including the length (469.3 cm), thickness (0.67 mm), width (5.8 cm) full weight (2.81 kg), empty weight (1.17 kg), length of the cecum (16.56 cm), length of the colon (430.94 cm), length of anal canal (12.9 cm), percent body weight of the full large intestine (4.55%) and percent body weight of empty (1.90%) were measured. The length of lesser curvature was significantly higher (P<0.05) in pigs that received the 25% dried SCR + 51.75% yellow corn + 23.25% rice bran (60.33 kg) than 25% dried SCR + 64.75% yellow corn + 10.25% rice bran (65.00 kg) finishing diet . Length of rectum was significantly longer in native pigs fed with 25 % dried SCR + 64.75 % yellow corn + 10.25 % rice bran diet (65.00 kg) than 25 % dried SCR + 51.75% yellow corn + 23.25% rice bran (60.33 kg) . |
