The Use of Telemedicine Among Patients of Baguio City and La Trinidad, Benguet

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically impacted every sector of society, especially the healthcare system. It resulted in limited medical consultations, admissions, and other health services that led to telemedicine use in compensation for face-to-face medical consultations. Thus, a need to study the experiences of patients who utilize telemedicine during the pandemic. This study aimed to explore, describe, and understand patients' experience in using telemedicine among patients of Baguio City and La Trinidad, Benguet. The study utilized a descriptive qualitative design. The research was conducted in Baguio City and La Trinidad, Benguet. The study employed the purposive sampling method and network sampling, where criteria were used to select and recruit eligible participants. Collected data were analyzed through Braun & Clarke's Deductive Thematic Analysis. The patients of Baguio City and La Trinidad Benguet rely on using various modalities to access healthcare information and services during the COVID-19 pandemic. They have various reasons for using telemedicine, such as a family member with pre-existing conditions, COVID-related symptoms, and school requirements. Most participants find telemedicine a convenient choice for patients who cannot go to clinics and hospitals, especially those with chronic medical conditions and who fear leaving the house as they might catch the contagious disease. Lastly, Telemedicine has advantages, disadvantages, and potential limitations that medical professionals and patients must address. Continuous massive telemedicine campaign and regular monitoring and revision on the digital communication tools of the hospitals and clinics to maintain databases to ensure service quality for telemedicine clients. Further studies should be done for the gradual improvement of systematic telemedicine.
